Chloe and Naioni Katiyo with Shas and "The Big Swap" teapot
For Fairtrade Fortnight this year, the Merton Fairtrade Steering Group is asking people to swap one item in their weekly shopping trolley for a Fairtrade version.
Caroline Katiyo, who owns the Fairtrade Tariro cafe in Morden and is a member of the steering group said, "The Fairtrade movement continues to go from strength to strength, with UK sales in 2009 up an incredible 12%, in spite of the recession. It is wonderful that so many people in Britain are willing to pay just a little bit extra to give the poor in developing countries a fair price."
Catherine Edser, another member of the steering group added, "The Big Swap is a brilliant idea now that people can buy around 4500 Fairtrade products and I am certain that 2010 will be yet another fantastic year for growth in sales."
Shas said, "I am delighted that the Merton Fairtrade Steering Group is working so hard to maintain Merton's status as a Fairtrade Borough - they really are a fantastic inspiration to the rest of us."
